Let’s Write Right Quality Enhancement Plan (QEP)
As part of the reaccreditation of the University of Holy Cross in 2017 by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSOC), a Quality Enhancement Plan or QEP was approved. Entitled Let’s Write Right: Writing in the Disciplines, the overarching goal of the plan WAS to focus on improving the quality of undergraduate students’ writing:
A 5-year QEP Impact Report was submitted to SACSCOC in March 2023. It was approved without revision. The QEP is now completed.
The following QEP policies have been approved as ongoing University Academic Policies:
- English Proficiency Testing: All students transferring credit for ENG 101 and 102 are required to take the English Proficiency Test, which is scored using the AAC&U Written Communication VALUE Rubric. A passing score is 2/4 on the rubric. Students who do not pass the test are allowed to retest. Students who fail a second time are required to seek remediation through tutoring in the Writing Lab until they are able to pass the test.
The following transfer students are exempt from the English Proficiency Test requirement:
- Students who have already earned a baccalaureate degree,
- Students who are non-degree seeking, and
- Students who tested out of ENG 101 and 102 and received credit with a grade of P.
- Writing-Intensive courses: All major undergraduate degree programs require majors to take 2 writing-intensive courses, 1 at the 300-level and 1 at the 400-level.These courses are designated as writing intensive in the University Catalog Course Descriptions. A writing assignment (paper or project) is required in these classes.
